Farooq Abdullah Claims Central Government Resettled Rohingyas in J&K

Jammu, Dec 10 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of J&K and current President of the National Conference (NC), Farooq Abdullah, stated on Tuesday that the Rohingyas were resettled in Jammu by the Central government. He emphasized that it is the obligation of the J&K government to ensure they receive basic amenities.

“We did not bring them here. The government of India brought them here. They have been settled here, and as long as they are here, nobody can deny them water and electricity as it is the duty of the J&K government to provide them basic amenities for living,” Abdullah remarked while addressing media in Kathua, following accusations from local BJP leaders that the NC was involved in a “larger political conspiracy” by allowing approximately 14,000 Rohingyas and Bangladeshis to settle in Jammu city.

BJP's chief spokesperson, Sunil Sethi, accused the NC of “favoring” these Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, labeling them as illegal settlers based on their religion. “If they belonged to another religion, would the NC leadership support them in this manner?” Sethi questioned reporters yesterday.

Farooq Abdullah also criticized what he termed the ‘double engine government’, referring to the dual power structure of the Lt Governor and the Chief Minister in J&K. He stated, “This double-engine government will not function effectively. There must be a single power center in J&K, which should be the elected government. Statehood needs to be restored. This is a promise made by the Government of India and has been pledged before the Supreme Court. Just as their election promises were fulfilled, the commitment to the Supreme Court will be honored, and statehood will be reinstated,” he asserted.

He also linked the ongoing electricity shortages in J&K to an extended dry spell, which has resulted in insufficient rainfall and snowfall. “There has been a prolonged dry spell, which is why we are experiencing shortages of electric power. Efforts are being made to resolve this issue,” he commented.

Abdullah warned against environmental degradation, stressing that protecting the environment is not just the government's responsibility but also the duty of the citizens. He acknowledged that the healthcare system in J&K is in dire need of improvement and requires immediate government intervention.
