Bengaluru, June 16 (NationPress) An FIR has been registered against a bike taxi driver on Monday for allegedly assaulting a woman passenger within the jurisdiction of the Jayanagar police station in Bengaluru, as reported by an official.
The police stated that the incident took place on June 14, with the accused bike taxi driver identified as Suhas.
Initially, the woman, who works for a private company, was hesitant to lodge a police complaint but eventually changed her mind after encouragement from a friend.
The confrontation stemmed from a dispute over over-speeding, reckless, and negligent driving. During the altercation, in plain sight of the public, the bike taxi driver struck the woman, causing her to collapse.
A video capturing the incident has gone viral on social media, raising alarms regarding the safety of women in Bengaluru. The victim approached the police and presented the video evidence. Initially, the police had documented the incident as a Non-Cognizable Report (NCR).
In a media statement on Monday, Suhas claimed that the woman had verbally abused and struck him first, insisting that he only defended himself.
"I took a shortcut to the destination, and midway, she demanded that I stop and yelled at me in English. I attempted to explain that I had been operating a bike taxi for five years and knew the quickest route. After we arrived, she hit me with her tiffin box in front of bystanders. I couldn't tolerate the humiliation and retaliated," he stated.
The accused driver further claimed that he had alerted her manager regarding her aggressive behavior. He mentioned that he had received a call from the police and would fully cooperate with the investigation.
The police have formally charged the bike taxi driver under Sections 352 (intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman).
