Bhopal, March 31 (NationPress) A fire erupted on Monday on the Ahmedabad-Barauni Express near the Itarsi railway junction in Narmadapuram (formerly known as Hoshangabad) district of Madhya Pradesh, as confirmed by an official, who noted that fortunately, there were no casualties.
The incident transpired between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. close to Khutwasa railway station, positioned between Itarsi and Banapura.
Narmadapuram is located 35 km from Khutwasa.
The fire originated in the generator and parcel car at the rear of the moving train. A passenger reportedly raised the alarm after spotting smoke, which was subsequently verified by the train manager.
Having departed from Khandwa towards the Itarsi railway junction around 2 p.m., the train was abruptly stopped near Dharamkundi railway station as smoke became apparent.
This sudden halt incited panic among passengers, though officials informed IANS that there were no casualties or damage to passengers' belongings.
The source of the blaze was identified as the generator and parcel car, which was transporting cartons of steel utensils, contributing to the dense smoke and flames.
Personnel within the coach acted quickly to evacuate, and the affected bogie was detached from the train to avert further damage.
Emergency services, including the fire brigade, police officials from Dolaria police station, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from Itarsi, promptly arrived on the scene to manage the situation.
The train remained halted for about one and a half hours while efforts to extinguish the fire were underway.
As a precaution, rail traffic on the down track between Khandwa and Itarsi was temporarily suspended and resumed around 6 p.m.
Once the fire was controlled and the damaged coach was removed, the train continued its journey with all passengers, as noted by the official.
On January 22, 2025, a tragic event occurred on the same track near Jalgaon, Maharashtra, when a rumor of fire caused panic on the Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express, leading to at least 13 deaths as passengers leaped from the train and were struck by another train.
