Kochi, Sep 15 (NationPress) Kerala is poised to welcome the 5th edition of the World Teak Conference (WTC) from September 17-20, marking a historic moment as it becomes the first nation to host this esteemed global gathering.
The conference is anticipated to attract more than 350 delegates from 40 countries, positioning Kerala as a key player in global dialogues surrounding sustainable teak forestry and commerce.
Under the theme “Sustainable Development of the Global Teak Sector -- Adapting to Future Markets and Environments”, attendees will engage in discussions addressing the sector's challenges and opportunities, covering topics from socioeconomic factors and genetics to silviculture, technology, environment, and international trade.
This significant event is co-hosted by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in collaboration with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), TEAKNET, and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) of Japan, with technical backing from FAO, IUFRO, and MAFF Japan.
Dr. C.S. Kannan Warrier, Director of KFRI, expressed pride in this milestone, stating: “Hosting the World Teak Conference in Kerala is a proud moment for India.”
Being the birthplace of teak plantations and home to the world’s inaugural Teak Museum, Kerala embodies both the rich heritage and bright future of teak forestry.
This conference aims to outline sustainable paths for the global teak industry while reinforcing Kerala’s status as a knowledge hub.
Over the course of four days, participants will engage in scientific sessions, business-to-business meetings, panel discussions, and field visits, creating a comprehensive forum for policymakers, researchers, traders, and farmers to influence the sector's future.
As a co-organizer, ITTO will share its expertise in tropical forest management, trade, and sustainable development.
Having supported numerous teak-related initiatives across producer nations, ITTO seeks to foster knowledge exchange and international collaboration through the conference, enhancing sustainable practices and connecting local communities with global markets.
Kerala’s Nilambur teak is renowned for its exceptional quality, uniform grain, and durability, making it a favored choice in shipbuilding, high-end furniture, and construction.
As the heart of teak plantations, Kerala supplies sustainably managed timber, solidifying India’s role in the global teak trade while promoting responsible forestry practices.
