Agartala, Aug 30 (NationPress) The Tripura government has commenced the distribution of PVC ration cards to beneficiaries of the Public Distribution System (PDS), transitioning from outdated paper booklets to enhance transparency and provide digital support, as stated by an official on Saturday.

A high-ranking official from the Food and Civil Supplies Department indicated that the department is rolling out PVC ration cards to PDS beneficiaries, phasing out the old paper documents.

Tripura proudly stands as the first state in the Northeast to introduce PVC ration cards.

When swiped at a ration shop, all linked databases will be updated accordingly, the official noted.

Additionally, Tripura leads the Northeast in installing PoS machines to facilitate the use of PVC ration cards.

According to the official, out of the 9.91 lakh family ration card holders, 4.87 lakh PVC cards will be distributed in the initial phase, with remaining cardholders receiving theirs in subsequent phases following the completion of e-KYCs (electronic Know Your Customer).

“Distribution of PVC ration cards has been delayed for some PDS beneficiaries who have not completed their e-KYC due to issues like Aadhaar card and residential proof. Many have also relocated to their original homes,” the official explained.

He added that PVC cards, akin to voter ID cards or Aadhaar cards, are designed for durability, minimizing the risk of damage or dirt accumulation, even during adverse weather conditions.

The benefits of a PVC ration card merge the advantages of a traditional ration card with enhanced durability, convenience, and efficiency within the PDS.

Key advantages include access to subsidized food, improved transparency, decreased corruption, ease of access, and a long-lasting, waterproof physical card.

To further assist PDS consumers, the Food and Civil Supplies Department plans to transform 600 government fair price shops, out of a total of 2,072, into model outlets.

The department has already allocated Rs 5,000 to each ration shop dealer to help convert their shops into model outlets, addressing the fundamental needs of consumers, as the official noted that these measures are aimed at enhancing the convenience of ration cardholders.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury emphasized that the department remains committed to maintaining high standards in food quality and is dedicated to improving services through the PDS.

The minister conducted a state-level conference with ration shop dealers, encouraging them to uphold transparency and quality in their offerings. Currently, all PDS consumers receive rice, sugar, flour, kerosene, and tea leaves from ration shops at subsidized rates.

Point of View

I believe this initiative by the Tripura government reflects a significant step towards modernizing welfare systems in India. By adopting PVC ration cards, the state is prioritizing transparency and efficiency, crucial for maintaining trust in public distribution systems. Such measures should inspire other states to enhance their service delivery for the benefit of citizens.
