Chennai, Dec 8 (NationPress) As the State Highways Department accelerates the construction of the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, which links Mahabalipuram to Ennore Port, local fishermen in the Ennore area are expressing grave concerns about the alleged blockage of the Kosasthalaiyar River caused by bridge construction activities.
The fishing community claims that significant amounts of earth and debris have been dumped into the river to aid the project, disrupting the natural water flow and endangering their traditional means of livelihood.
Fishermen from Kattukuppam, Mugathuvarakuppam, and Sivan Padai Kuppam villages rely heavily on a fishing area known as Velamaram Paadu, where the bridge has recently been constructed.
Although the bridge work is reportedly finished, the temporary earthen bunds and construction debris remain in the river, according to local fishermen.
K. Murugeshan, a fisherman from Kattukuppam, noted that the dumping commenced in January despite strong opposition from the community.
“The Highways Department continued to dump large volumes of earth into the river even as we protested. After persistent demonstrations, we managed to halt the dumping for nearly two months. However, the material already deposited has narrowed the river and changed the flow pattern,” he stated.
In a separate appeal to the authorities, fisherman-activist Retnakumar cautioned that the narrowed river opening has accelerated the water flow, making it challenging for fishing boats to navigate safely.
“The stronger current has already resulted in multiple incidents involving fishing vessels. This poses a direct danger to the lives of fishermen,” he emphasized.
Activists have also accused the Highways Department of breaching guidelines established by the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority. Reportedly, these clearance conditions specify that the project should not interfere with fishing operations, hinder natural water flow, or harm the ecosystem under any circumstances.
An official from the Environment Department stated that, in response to the complaints received, the Tiruvallur district administration—under whose jurisdiction the affected villages fall—has been instructed to investigate the issue and take appropriate measures.
The contentious bridge is part of a 2.8-km link road, featuring approach ramps on both sides, that connects the Northern Port Access Road (NPAR) with the Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti (TPP) Road across the Buckingham Canal and the Kosasthalaiyar River.
This link is a vital element of the ambitious Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, designed to enhance freight movement to Ennore Port. However, fishermen warn that development must not jeopardize their survival or the ecological balance of the river.
