Five killed in Maihar SUV-truck crash on NH-30, one critical
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Five people were killed and one left critically injured after a speeding Mahindra XUV700 rammed into the rear of a truck on National Highway 30 in Maihar district, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Tuesday, 7 July, police said. The crash, which occurred around 2 am near Rigra village under the Nadan Dehat police station limits, left the SUV completely mangled with all six occupants trapped inside.
How the Accident Unfolded
The XUV700, carrying six young men, was travelling at high speed when it struck the rear of a truck moving ahead of it. The force of the impact was severe enough to crush the vehicle, trapping all passengers. Dial-112 teams, highway patrol personnel, and local police rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation, pulling out survivors from the wreckage.
Five occupants were pronounced dead at the spot, while the sixth was extracted with serious injuries and transported to the Civil Hospital in Amarpatan. Following initial treatment, he was referred to the District Hospital in Satna, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
The Deceased and the Injured
The five victims were identified as Ankur Patel (40), Mridul Patel (32), Vijay Patel (30), Harishankar Patel (25), and Shiva Patel (23). Four of them — Ankur, Mridul, Vijay, and Harishankar — were residents of Tanaja village in Maihar district, while Shiva Patel hailed from Narora village. The injured survivor has been identified as Om Patel.
According to police, all those who died belonged to the families of former Independent MLA Lalji Bhai Patel and late Congress MLA Mathura Patel.
What the Group Was Returning From
Preliminary investigation revealed that the six men were returning from a birthday celebration of Manoj Patel, Vice-President of the Amarpatan Janpad Panchayat, at the time of the crash. Police suspect overspeeding and the driver losing control of the vehicle as the primary causes, though the exact sequence of events will be established after a formal investigation.
Police Response and Investigation
Station House Officer of Nadan Dehat, Panchraj Singh, confirmed: 'Five people died in the accident, while one youth sustained serious injuries and has been sent to the hospital for treatment. A case has been registered, and an investigation into the cause of the accident has been initiated.'
The bodies were sent to the Maihar Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Traffic on NH-30 was briefly disrupted before being restored. Investigators are expected to examine the vehicle's speed data and road conditions as part of the probe.
