Amaravati, March 20 (NationPress) Tragically, five engineering students lost their lives in the Godavari River in the Polavaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, according to police reports.
The remains of three students have been recovered while search efforts continue for the remaining two. The incident took place near Purshottapatnam in the Etapaka mandal.
As per police information, a group of seven students from SRM Engineering College, Amaravati, ventured into the river for a swim.
The students, unaware of the water's depth, suddenly encountered difficulties and five of them were swept away, while two others managed to swim back to shore.
Local residents, aided by boats, began searching for the missing individuals. Authorities and police also initiated a search operation. The bodies of three students, identified as C. Srikar, P. Abhiram, and Navdeep, were recovered.
Srikar was from Bhadrachalam in Telangana, Abhiram was from Vizianagaram, and Navdeep hailed from Vuyyuru in Krishna district.
Efforts are ongoing to locate Goka Teja and Pasham Satish Kumar, who are from Vuyyuru and Madanpalli, respectively.
These students were in their second year of B. Tech at SRM College in Amaravati and were on a recreational trip during the Ugadi holidays. After visiting Bhadrachalam in Telangana, they arrived at Purushottapatnam.
Chanduri Deepak and Gaddam Harshvardhan, both from Andhra Pradesh, were the only ones who reached the riverbank safely.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his sorrow over this unfortunate incident and offered heartfelt condolences to the victims' families.
In an official statement, he discussed the matter with officials to gather more details about the incident. They informed him that out of the seven students who entered the Godavari River for a swim, five went missing.
Officials updated the Chief Minister that three of the missing students had perished, while search operations continued to find the remaining two, Satish Kumar and Teja.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to enhance search efforts for the two missing students.
Chandrababu extended his condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that the government would support them during this challenging time.
