The bodies of three youths were retrieved, while efforts continued to locate the remaining two.
This unfortunate event transpired at Tadipudi in the Tallapudi mandal when a group of 11 students, all under the age of 20, decided to visit the river for a bath early in the morning.
Unaware of the water's depth, they began to struggle in the current.
Eyewitnesses reported that in their attempts to assist each other, five of the youths succumbed to the water, while six others managed to swim to safety.
Local residents alerted the police, who quickly arrived to initiate a rescue operation with the help of trained swimmers. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire service personnel also participated in the rescue attempts.
Eventually, NDRF teams recovered the bodies of three youths, who were identified as P. Durga Prasad (19), Tirumalashetti Pavan (17), and P. Sai Krishna (19).
Search efforts continued for G. Akash (19) and Anishetty Pavan (19).
These young men were intermediate or degree students from Kovvur, Tallapudi, and Rajamahendravaram, all hailing from the same village.
With colleges closed for Maha Shivratri, they planned to visit the river for a bath and then proceed to a temple for puja.
The body of Durga Prasad was transported to a government hospital for autopsy while families of the missing individuals gathered at the site.
Senior police and revenue officials were overseeing the search operations.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Deva Kumar and Kovvur Revenue Divisional Officer Rani Susmita were among the officials present at the scene.
