Chennai, Jan 18 (NationPress) Concluding a period of intense speculation and political chatter, former CPM MLA S Rajendran officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday, signifying a pivotal change in Kerala's political dynamics.
The party membership was conferred by state BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar at the party's headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram around 11:30 AM.
Sources from the BJP indicated that Rajendran is anticipated to speak to the media in Thiruvananthapuram soon, where he will likely discuss his motivations and future role within the party.
Earlier this month, Rajendran had made clear his intentions to align with the BJP.
On January 10, he confirmed a prior meeting with Rajeev Chandrasekhar to discuss his political trajectory, expressing that he was awaiting an official decision from BJP leadership.
With an invitation now extended, he has opted to accept membership. Rajendran emphasized that he did not set any personal demands or conditions before joining the BJP.
He clarified that his decision was motivated solely by the development needs of his district and reaffirmed that he does not plan to run for election from the Devikulam constituency, where he previously served.
A seasoned politician with a 15-year career, including three terms as a legislator and as president of the Idukki District Panchayat, Rajendran's relationship with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been rocky for the past four years.
Following the last Assembly elections, internal grievances led to accusations that Rajendran had undermined LDF candidate A Raja. Consequently, he was suspended from the party following an inquiry commission report, and despite the end of his suspension, his membership was never reinstated, which deepened the divide.
In the wake of this, Rajendran opted not to renew his CPM membership and drew attention by campaigning for BJP candidates in local elections, notably in plantation areas such as Idamalakudi and Devikulam.
While he has firmly stated his intention not to contest the upcoming Assembly elections from Devikulam, political analysts suggest that BJP leadership might encourage him to reconsider in light of the shifting political landscape.
