Kolkata, Oct 11 (NationPress) A former leader of the National Democratic Alliance has been apprehended in Bihar for allegedly running a fraud operation worth crores of rupees in Bengal, as confirmed by a police officer on Saturday.
The intelligence division of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate took the suspect, identified as Rajeev Ranjan Kumar, into custody.
Rajeev Ranjan, who unsuccessfully ran for the 2020 Bihar assembly elections representing the Bhartiya Sablog Party from the Sasaram constituency, was arrested in connection with two distinct fraud cases filed at the Salt Lake East Police Station in September, according to Bidhannagar police.
A senior official from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate stated, "The officers detained him earlier this week following a raid conducted in Bihar. There are two fraud cases registered against him, and an investigation is underway."
In recent months, he had been living in a residence in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata, where he established a base to conduct a business that allegedly defrauded individuals and embezzled crores of rupees.
The police are currently investigating the two cases lodged against him. On September 7, it was reported that Rs 4.5 crore had been embezzled from a resident of Salt Lake, former Calcutta High Court judge Indrajit Chatterjee. Rajeev has been identified as a key suspect in this case.
On September 14, another case was filed by a resident of AJ Block, alleging that Rajeev forged documents to fraudulently sell a property valued at Rs 1 crore in CD Block, located in Kolkata's Salt Lake.
According to police sources, Rajeev committed these significant frauds within the jurisdiction of the Bidhannagar East police station and fled to Bihar upon sensing danger. Following this intelligence, the police assembled a team for the investigation and subsequently arrested the former NDA leader.
“The officers from Bidhannagar police apprehended him earlier this week during a raid at his hideout in Bihar. There are two fraud cases against him, and an investigation is ongoing,” said a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
