Key Takeaways
Ranchi, April 17 (NationPress) In a significant encounter, security forces eliminated four notorious Maoists, including their leader Sahdev Mahto, who had a bounty of Rs 15 lakh on his head, on the border of Chatra and Hazaribagh districts on Friday, according to officials. This operation marks a crucial achievement in the ongoing efforts against Maoist insurgency in the state.
Officials from the Jharkhand Police Headquarters revealed that the operation was executed based on accurate intelligence provided by the Intelligence Bureau (IB), indicating the presence of a Maoist group in the vicinity.
In response to this intelligence, combined teams of local police and security forces initiated a cordon-and-search operation. When the Maoists were encircled, they opened fire, which led the security personnel to retaliate. After several hours of fierce gunfire, four Maoists were confirmed dead at the scene, with reports suggesting additional injuries among their ranks.
Following the encounter, security forces discovered two AK-47 rifles, various homemade and advanced weaponry, Maoist propaganda materials, everyday items, and a substantial amount of ammunition at the site.
Mahto, one of the deceased, was regarded as a key figure behind numerous significant incidents in the area.
In a related operation, security forces have also targeted a Maoist faction in the Chadaradera forest near Baliba village, within the jurisdiction of the Chotanagra police station in Jharkhand's Saranda region. All escape routes have been secured, and aerial surveillance is being conducted to track the Maoists.
Reports indicate that this group may include Maoist Misir Besra, who has a bounty of Rs 1 crore, and there are believed to be over 100 Maoists present in the area.
Chaibasa Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Renu confirmed that the search operation in the Saranda forest remains ongoing, with further updates expected.
Notably, six security personnel have sustained injuries due to IED blasts and gunfire in the West Singhbhum region during the anti-Maoist operations over the past three days.
