Key Takeaways
Raipur/Bijapur, Feb 5 (NationPress) In a remarkable success for security forces in their battle against Maoist insurgency, a pivotal operation in the densely forested and rugged areas of Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district culminated in the elimination of a prominent Maoist leader on Thursday. The operation took place within the jurisdiction of the Tarrem police station.
Based on precise intelligence regarding the location of Udham Singh, a member of the South Bastar Division Divisional Committee, and other armed militants, teams from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) Bijapur and the CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) initiated a search in the targeted area, as stated by Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav.
The clash between security forces and Maoists began around 7 a.m. and lasted for several hours amidst the challenging terrain.
Following the encounter, the body of Udham Singh was discovered. He was a wanted individual with a reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head, serving as the commander of Platoon No 30 in the South Bastar Division, according to police reports.
Originating from Kottaguda village under the Basaguda police station, Singh became affiliated with the CPI (Maoist) around 2002-03, mainly operating along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border.
In recent years, he was active within the Pamed Area Committee, where he faced nine criminal charges from various police stations in Bijapur.
Law enforcement authorities have linked him to several significant incidents, including an assault on a police unit in the Gundam forests in 2023, a police-Maoist confrontation in the Putkel-Chipurabhatti forest in 2024, and an attack on the Jidpalli camp in 2024, the official noted.
From the scene, security personnel seized an AK-47 rifle with two magazines and 28 rounds, along with cordex wire, a wireless set, a mobile device, a pouch, a backpack, a tiffin bag, explosives, and various Maoist paraphernalia.
In a press briefing, Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, Sundarraj P., Deputy Inspector General (Ops), CRPF, Bijapur Sector, BS Negi, and other senior officials elaborated on the success of this operation in neutralizing a high-value target, emphasizing the intensified efforts to dismantle Maoist networks in the Bastar region.
This operation is a testament to the district’s strong performance in anti-Naxal campaigns. In 2025, security forces recorded the elimination of 163 Maoists in various encounters, and in 2026 alone, 11 have been killed, totaling 232 Maoists neutralized since January 2024.
Additionally, 1,163 individuals have been apprehended, and 888 have surrendered and reintegrated into society through rehabilitation programs.
As the Union government approaches the March 31, 2026, deadline for the eradication of Left-Wing Extremism, these outcomes highlight the ongoing efforts to restore peace and foster development in regions previously plagued by insurgency in Bijapur.
Search operations are still active in the area to eliminate any remaining threats and ensure full security.
