Are Tests Underway for the Uncrewed Gaganyaan Mission Slated for 2027?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) The ISRO is currently conducting a series of tests for the upcoming launch of Gaganyaan's inaugural uncrewed mission, G1, which is scheduled for March. This mission precedes the anticipated human spaceflight set for 2027, as stated by Chairman V. Narayanan on Friday.
In a discussion with reporters, Narayanan highlighted that the tests are geared toward improving the safety of the Gaganyatris — Shubhanshu Shukla, Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, and Angad Pratap.
“Every system involved in this mission must be thoroughly qualified,” he emphasized.
“The Gaganyaan program is scheduled for 2027. Prior to that, three uncrewed missions are planned. We are diligently working towards the first uncrewed mission,” the ISRO chairman noted.
“Numerous tests are ongoing. The safety aspect of the Gaganyaan mission is of utmost importance. We must exercise caution and ensure that every system is qualified. For the rocket systems, achieving a perfect score is essential,” he added.
The G1 mission is nearing completion, with approximately 90 percent finished and over 8,000 ground tests, including structural qualifications, successfully executed. This progress is facilitating software simulations and environmental validations to adhere to the targeted timeline.
Scheduled for March 2026, the G1 test, along with the Vyommitra robot, will assess life support, re-entry, and recovery systems.
Previously, Narayanan dismissed concerns about potential delays in the Gaganyaan mission due to recent PSLV rocket launch failures.
While he acknowledged that an investigation into these failures is in progress, he assured that the programs remain independent of one another.
The Gaganyaan mission aims to transport astronauts to low Earth orbit for a three-day journey, followed by a safe return to Earth.
The astronauts will be launched into a 400 km orbit using the human-rated LVM3 rocket.
The success of Gaganyaan will represent a significant milestone for India in space exploration, paving the way for future missions, a space station by 2035, and a manned moon mission by 2040.
