In Panaji, on September 25 (NationPress), Ganesh Gaonkar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been chosen as the new Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly. He achieved this position by garnering 32 votes, decisively defeating his Congress opponent, Altone D’Costa, who managed only seven votes. This election was necessitated by the resignation of the former Speaker, Ramesh Tawadkar.

Gaonkar's election was widely expected due to the BJP's significant majority in the assembly, comprising 28 MLAs out of 40 total seats. Additionally, they enjoy the backing of two MLAs from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and three Independents.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant congratulated the newly elected Speaker, expressing trust that Gaonkar would oversee Assembly activities with integrity. Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao also extended his congratulations, emphasizing the necessity of impartiality.

Following the election, both the Chief Minister and the Opposition Leader escorted Gaonkar to the Speaker's Chair. Gaonkar, who represents the Sanvordem assembly constituency, previously held the role of Protem Speaker.

Born in Sanguem in December 1958, Gaonkar possesses a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mysore and has been an active participant in state politics and legislative efforts.

The BJP emerged as the single-largest party in the 2022 Goa Assembly elections, securing 20 out of 40 seats. Although one seat short of a majority, the BJP received support from three independent MLAs and two from the MGP to form the government.

The Congress party had won 11 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured 2 seats. In September 2022, eight Congress MLAs shifted their allegiance to the BJP, thus strengthening its influence further.

Chief Minister Sawant, who contested from the Sanquelim seat, retained his position and continues to lead the state government into its third consecutive term.
