Amritpal Singh, Notorious Gangster, Captured in Moldova
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, March 7 (NationPress) In a major breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to capture criminals evading justice abroad as part of the 'Gangstran Te Vaar' initiative directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the notorious gangster Amritpal Singh, also known as Amrit Dalam, has been apprehended at the Moldova border, confirmed Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, on Saturday.
The apprehension of Amritpal Dalam was executed based on an Interpol Red Notice, which was issued following a request from the Punjab Police in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol, and various other central agencies.
Notably, under the guidance of Chief Minister Mann, the Punjab Police has recently set up an Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), led by Inspector General of Police (IGP-Counter Intelligence) Ashish Choudhary, aimed at reaching out to criminals hiding internationally and facilitating their extradition back to Punjab to face justice.
Reports indicate that Amritpal Singh, a resident of Dalam Nangal village in Batala, was associated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang and had fled overseas using a fake passport.
He has been actively involved in extortion activities, targeting individuals and businesses primarily in the Amritsar area.
DGP Yadav stated that Amritpal Singh is wanted for several serious crimes, including drug trafficking, murders, and attempted murders in Punjab, and had been on the run abroad for an extended period.
“His (Amrit Dalam’s) capture results from extensive international collaboration and relentless follow-ups by Punjab Police agencies,” he remarked, adding that legal and diplomatic measures are currently underway to facilitate his extradition or deportation to India so that he can confront the law.
The DGP emphasized that the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) is actively pursuing various criminals who are currently residing outside India.
