Jaipur, Feb 13 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, urged the current Chief Minister, Bhajan Lal Sharma, on Thursday to confront the contentious topic of phone tapping in the state.
At a press conference held in Jaipur, Gehlot recounted that during his leadership, when phone tapping allegations arose,
“The opposition called for my resignation amidst the phone tapping claims. I addressed the Assembly and made it clear that no phones belonging to MLAs, ministers, or any individual were tapped,” stated Gehlot during his press briefing in Jaipur.
The former Chief Minister insisted that since Bhajan Lal Sharma holds the positions of Chief Minister, Leader of the House, and the state's Home Minister, he should elucidate why he remains silent on this matter, unlike during Gehlot's time.
Gehlot also mentioned that following the similar allegations made by BJP minister Kirodi Lal Meena, Chief Minister Sharma owes the Assembly an explanation to resolve the ongoing controversy.
He stressed that Rajasthan does not have a tradition of phone tapping.
“The law allows phone tapping only in cases involving anti-social entities or those charged with treason. Even then, prior ministerial consent is a must. If there has been unlawful tapping, the government has violated the law. Who will be accountable? The Chief Minister needs to respond,” added the former Chief Minister.
Earlier, former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot labeled the phone tapping allegations as a ‘serious crime’ necessitating an unbiased investigation.
“Regardless of whether these actions occurred previously or are ongoing, those culpable - be it political figures, officials, or police personnel - should face consequences,” he remarked.
Pilot highlighted the inconsistency within the BJP, stating: "When an opposition leader or an ordinary citizen raises such an issue, the government provides clarification. However, now, when Cabinet Minister Kirodi Lal Meena claims his phone is under surveillance, the government questions its own minister instead of taking action. This is inherently contradictory.”
Recently, BJP leader Kirodi Lal Meena accused the government of phone tapping, asserting that BJP leaders are being specifically targeted through the monitoring of their communications.
Following his remarks, the Congress party launched an attack on the government in the Assembly, leading to intervention from the BJP high command.
BJP President J.P. Nadda held discussions with Rajasthan BJP leaders, after which the party issued a notice to Meena, who responded on Wednesday.
