Google Chooses Hyderabad for the Establishment of Safety Engineering Centre

Hyderabad, Dec 4 (NationPress) Google has selected Hyderabad to set up its Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC), which is anticipated to establish the city as a global leader in developing cybersecurity and safety engineering solutions for the globe.

The GSEC in Hyderabad will be the first of its kind in the APAC region, following Tokyo, and it will be the fifth globally, joining similar centers in Dublin, Munich, and Malaga.

The Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy, announced on the social media platform ‘X’ that he, along with Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu, has secured a significant cutting-edge technology investment partnership with Google.

The Chief Minister and IT Minister engaged with a global team from Google led by Royal Hansen, CIO of Google.

As per an official statement, this GSEC is a specialized international cybersecurity hub that will be essential in developing advanced security and online safety products tailored for India. The center will emphasize cutting-edge research, AI-driven security solutions, and establishing a collaborative environment for top experts and researchers in cybersecurity. It also aims to promote skill development, increase employment, and enhance cybersecurity capabilities within India.

Google, which has its largest workforce in Hyderabad, is currently constructing its largest office outside of its headquarters in this city.

The GSEC was initially announced on October 3, 2024, during the Google for India 2024 Conclave, sparking a competitive race among states to secure this investment.

The Telangana Government played a pivotal role in actively pursuing and ensuring that this state-of-the-art facility would be established in Hyderabad during the Chief Minister’s visit to Google Headquarters in the U.S., demonstrating the state's commitment to leading in technology, innovation, and cybersecurity.

Telangana has consistently been at the forefront of digital skill development. Hyderabad has emerged as the epicenter of IT/ITES development globally. Our city is already home to five of the most valuable technology companies in the world—Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and (Facebook) Meta. With this partnership, I hope we can swiftly address the global challenges of cybersecurity from Hyderabad,” the Chief Minister stated.

The establishment of GSEC in Hyderabad will be transformative for the city and the state, attracting top-tier safety engineers, local policy experts, and fostering collaboration with academic institutions and government partners to tackle the unique cybersecurity challenges in India. It will enhance the digital safety of businesses, government entities, and citizens, while also generating thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities.

“We are thrilled that Google is establishing the GSEC in Hyderabad, a city that is ideally positioned to become the global capital and hub for safety engineering, encompassing cyber and digital security. With this partnership, Hyderabad can evolve into a global center for this vast sector and meet the world’s security needs. The shared vision of excellence between Google and CM Revanth Reddy in making Hyderabad a global center promises potential for further collaborations,” remarked Royal Hansen, CIO of Google.

The collaboration between Telangana and Google aligns with the broader initiative of creating a vibrant technological ecosystem that fosters research, training, and innovation in ICT. As part of this ongoing digital transformation, the Telangana Fiber (T-Fiber) initiative aims to connect over 4.7 million rural households, and this partnership with Google will ensure the digital safety of these homes via secure Android TV/Smart TV systems. The collaboration with GSEC will further enhance these efforts, ensuring a secure and connected future for the citizens of Telangana.

Google is also in talks to set up a significant Cloud Centre of Excellence (Google C-CoE) in Hyderabad, equipped with state-of-the-art capabilities.

The company will explore a partnership with the Telangana government to develop India’s first Google-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System. This initiative will utilize Google Maps, AI, Live Camera Stream data management, and real-time traffic signaling management, among other technologies.

Google is also investigating ways to enhance Hyderabad as a Future City, aiming to develop one of the world's smartest cities. Additionally, it is looking to establish extensive partnerships in education to improve the entire school education system.

Google and the Telangana government plan to explore collaborations within the startup ecosystem, including the creation of a Google Startup Hub.

The company will also consider initiatives to support the Young India Skills University by leveraging skills and competencies in Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security.
