Former Janata Dal (United) MLA Narendra Kumar Neeraj, popularly known as Gopal Mandal, who held the Gopalpur Assembly seat in Bhagalpur district for four consecutive terms, is reportedly set to join the Indian National Congress — though the formal induction has been delayed. Mandal confirmed on 20 August that the joining ceremony, originally scheduled for the day, was postponed out of respect for the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The Postponement and What Triggered Speculation

Political buzz around Mandal's switch began after a poster announcing a joining ceremony surfaced in Patna. Mandal himself acknowledged the plan, stating he would be assigned a fresh date and would formally join the Congress at that time. However, the party has yet to officially confirm his induction.

Congress leader Asit Nath Tiwari said there was no formal communication about the proposed joining. He noted that if Mandal were joining at the state headquarters, senior party leadership would ordinarily have been informed in advance — a standard protocol that was apparently not followed.

Mandal won the Gopalpur seat on a JD-U ticket in every election from 2005 to 2020, building a reputation as a long-time associate of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The relationship soured when the party declined to field him in the 2025 Assembly elections.
