What Will West Bengal Governor Report on Messi Event Chaos?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 15 (NationPress) West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose announced on Monday that he plans to submit a detailed report to the Central government, highlighting his findings regarding the management failures at the Salt Lake Stadium during the event on December 13 featuring Argentine football icon Lionel Messi.
"I will present a report addressing this issue to the Union government. Additionally, I will offer recommendations to the West Bengal government regarding essential precautions for future mega events. As of now, only one organizer has been detained due to this mismanagement, but that is merely scratching the surface. All individuals accountable for this complete mismanagement must be held responsible," the Governor stated during a press briefing at Lok Bhavan.
The Governor further remarked that both the state administration and police personnel present at the stadium that day share equal responsibility for the incidents that transpired.
"There was a total breakdown of the management system. It is surprising that no advance guidelines were established for such a significant event. The stadium is a public asset, and it was the administration's obligation to safeguard it against vandalism. The administrative and police officers present failed to fulfill their responsibilities. Appropriate actions should be taken against them as well," he added.
The event was marred by chaos and disorder, with accusations of inadequate crowd control, damage to public property, and insufficient arrangements, leading to widespread criticism from attendees and civil society organizations.
State Sports Minister Aroop Biswas was also in attendance at the stadium alongside Lionel Messi. Numerous spectators, civil society members, and opposition leaders have claimed that Biswas and his family members surrounded the football star on the pitch, denying paying spectators the access they rightfully deserved.
These allegations have intensified political controversy regarding the event, with opposition parties accusing the state government of significant mismanagement and favoritism.
When inquired whether his report to the Union Government would specifically address the role of Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, the Governor refrained from providing a direct answer.
"I will detail everything concerning this matter to my constitutional superiors. Until then, I will refrain from making any separate public statements," stated Governor Ananda Bose.
His comments come amid increasing pressure on the state government to establish accountability for the failures during this high-profile event, which had garnered massive public interest and expectations.
