New Delhi, Jan 22 (NationPress) The government announced on Thursday that it has sanctioned more than 10,000 kilometers of road development projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana–IV (PMGSY-IV). This initiative will benefit regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
These roads are set to provide connectivity to approximately 3,270 previously isolated communities, granting them access to essential services, as highlighted by the Ministry of Rural Development.
“By closing the gap to healthcare, education, and enhanced livelihoods, these roads are expected to significantly transform rural life and lay a robust foundation for a developed India,” the ministry stated.
The primary objective of this scheme is to establish 62,500 kilometers of all-weather roads catering to unconnected habitations, with the construction of necessary bridges along these routes also being a key component.
In 2024, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal from the Department of Rural Development for the implementation of PMGSY-IV from FY 2024-25 to 2028-29.
The total financial outlay for this program is estimated at Rs 70,125 crore, which includes a central share of Rs 49,087.50 crore and a state share of Rs 21,037.50 crore, as reported by the ministry.
“From remote hilltops to the core of rural communities, these roads symbolize not just infrastructure improvement; they are essential avenues for progress, unlocking numerous opportunities and encouraging inclusive growth,” the statement emphasized.
Since its launch, PMGSY has sanctioned a cumulative total of 825,114 kilometers of rural roads, with 787,520 kilometers completed, reflecting nearly 95 percent physical progress as of December 2025. The planned construction during the implementation phase from FY 2024–25 to 2028–29 includes an additional 62,500 kilometers of roads, with an overall budget of Rs 70,125 crore.
Phase IV of PMGSY is specifically aimed at delivering all-weather road connectivity to 25,000 unconnected rural habitations.
