Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held wide-ranging discussions with Canada's leading pension funds, sovereign and institutional investors, and members of the Canada-India Business Council in Toronto on 27 May, making a strong pitch for India's economic trajectory and inviting global capital into key growth sectors.
What Goyal Pitched
The minister underscored the Indian government's emphasis on infrastructure development, financial sector reforms, and ease of doing business as drivers of unprecedented opportunity for global investors. He specifically invited stakeholders to partner with India in clean energy, technology, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, and supply chain diversification.
Goyal co-chaired the Canada-India Investment Roundtable alongside Maninder Sidhu, Canada's Minister of International Trade. 'Also, discussed ways to strengthen collaboration in financial markets to support sustainable growth and shared prosperity for both countries,' Goyal posted on X.
Key Meetings with Canadian Business Leaders
Goyal met V. Prem Watsa, Chairman and CEO of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, to discuss India's economic growth trajectory and opportunities for deeper collaboration across infrastructure, financial services, manufacturing, logistics, and clean energy. He noted Fairfax's longstanding engagement in India, including its investments in Bengaluru International Airport.
In a separate meeting, the minister engaged with Philip Witherington, President and CEO of Manulife Financial Corporation, exploring investment avenues within India's expanding financial services ecosystem. He also met Kevin Strain, President and CEO of Sun Life Canada, discussing collaboration in insurance, retirement solutions, healthcare financing, and long-term investments. 'Noted Sun Life's longstanding engagement in India and its contribution towards strengthening India's insurance and financial services sector,' Goyal said.
Critical Minerals and Supply Chain Focus
Goyal also held discussions with Rahim Suleman, President and CEO of Neo Performance Materials, centred on expanding the India-Canada partnership in critical minerals, rare earth processing, and advanced materials essential for clean technologies and future industries. 'We also explored opportunities to build stronger and more reliable supply chains, promote value addition, and support the growing global demand for strategic minerals,' Goyal said.
Broader Context
The Toronto engagements come at a time when India is actively courting Western institutional capital amid a broader push to diversify investment sources and reduce supply chain dependencies. This is the latest in a series of high-level outreach efforts by Indian ministers to North American financial hubs, reflecting New Delhi's intent to deepen economic ties with Canada beyond traditional trade corridors. The meetings signal renewed momentum in India-Canada economic relations, which had faced diplomatic headwinds in recent years.
