India-Spain trade can grow 10x in 10 years, says Piyush Goyal in Madrid
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday called for a tenfold increase in bilateral trade, investments, and tourism between India and Spain over the next decade, pitching an ambitious “10x10x10” partnership framework at a business event in Madrid. The minister’s remarks signal a concerted push to deepen economic ties at a time when the India-EU Free Trade Agreement is gaining momentum.
The 10x10x10 Vision
Addressing business leaders and dignitaries in Madrid, Goyal laid out a three-pronged ambition: 10 times growth in bilateral trade, 10 times growth in two-way investments, and 10 times growth in tourist flows — all within 10 years. “It may sound a little extravagant but friends, the real test of the strength of this partnership will come in giving ourselves some truly path-breaking and out of the ordinary, possibly unimaginable targets,” Goyal said.
He identified advanced manufacturing, mobility, railways, sustainability, innovation, arts, science, and culture as priority sectors for deeper India-Spain collaboration.
India-EU FTA: A Rare Consensus
Goyal highlighted the significance of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, describing it as an unusually smooth multilateral accord. “This is perhaps the only free trade agreement that Europe has finalised without any criticism from any of the member states. The 27 member states completely aligned in this partnership with India, as are businesses in India — not a murmur of dissent or dissatisfaction back home in India,” he told the gathering.
The minister argued that the FTA’s operationalisation would unlock vast commercial opportunities for both sides, spanning trade, technology, space, and defence.
Scale of the Opportunity
Goyal noted that India and the European Union together account for nearly 30 per cent of global trade and the global economy. He argued this combined weight creates a natural foundation for deeper engagement, provided both sides commit to ambitious targets rather than incremental ones. “Immense possibilities await the European Union and India,” he said.
This comes amid a broader Indian diplomatic and trade offensive in Europe, with New Delhi seeking to diversify its economic partnerships and reduce dependency on any single trade bloc.
What Comes Next
The push for a 10x trade target will now require follow-through at the institutional level — sector-specific roadmaps, investment facilitation frameworks, and visa and tourism agreements. Industry bodies on both sides will be watching whether Monday’s aspirational targets translate into actionable bilateral mechanisms in the months ahead.
