Visakhapatnam, Oct 28 (NationPress) A great danger signal number 10 has been raised at Kakinada Port as the fierce cyclone 'Montha' approaches the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
As the cyclone draws near, the Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam has instructed local authorities to upgrade the danger signal from seven to ten at Kakinada Port.
This great danger signal is the highest warning issued for ports during severe cyclonic conditions.
Additionally, danger signal number nine has been raised at ports including Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Kalingapatnam, and Bheemunipatnam.
Meanwhile, signal number eight has been hoisted at Machilipatnam, Nizampatnam, Krishnapatnam, and Vadarevu ports.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) reported that the cyclonic storm Montha has intensified into a severe cyclone over the west-central Bay of Bengal, moving north-northwestward at a speed of 12 kmph. It is currently located approximately 160 km from Machilipatnam, 240 km from Kakinada, and 320 km from Visakhapatnam.
The situation is being closely monitored from the control room of the Disaster Management Authority.
Forecasts indicate that the severe cyclone is expected to make landfall between Kakinada and Machilipatnam tonight, bringing with it strong cyclonic winds of 90-110 km per hour. This may result in extremely heavy rainfall across regions from Srikakulam to Nellore, with particularly intense downpours in certain areas.
APSDMA has urged residents to remain indoors for their safety.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal Andhra Pradesh, warning of scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy showers expected in isolated locations across several districts including Srikakulam, Parvathipuram, Manyam, and others.
Heavy rainfall is also expected in several areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued high wave alerts for coastal regions, predicting waves in the range of 3 to 4.7 meters. They have advised small vessels to avoid shore and to halt recreational activities due to potential erosion and wave surges caused by the cyclone.
