New Delhi, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections reached Rs 1,93,384 crore in January, reflecting a growth of 6.2 percent compared to the same time last year, according to official statistics released on Sunday.

Gross GST collections were Rs 1,82,094 crore for January. Cumulatively (from April to January), total collections soared to Rs 18,43,423 crore, representing a robust 8.3 percent increase year-on-year.

Furthermore, the net GST revenue for January was Rs 1,70,719 crore, which is an increase of 7.6 percent over the same month last year. The year-to-date net revenue reached Rs 15,95,752 crore, with an annual growth of 6.8 percent.

Domestic GST collections increased by 4.8 percent year-on-year to Rs 1,41,132 crore. Import GST collections remained robust, with gross import revenue totaling Rs 52,253 crore, reflecting a growth of 10.1 percent from January 2025.

The compensation cess, which continues as a transitional measure, fell to Rs 5,768 crore, down from Rs 13,009 crore last year.

Total refunds for January amounted to Rs 22,665 crore, a slight decline of 3.1 percent year-on-year. The state-wise post-settlement GST revenues presented a varied picture.

In December, GST collections saw a 6.1 percent increase, reaching Rs 1,74,550 crore, compared to Rs 1,64,556 crore in the same month the previous year, underscoring the rise in economic activity during that period. Central GST collections were Rs 34,289 crore, state GST at Rs 41,368 crore, and integrated GST collections reached Rs 98,894 crore.

In other news, the Finance Ministry has issued a series of notifications implementing a new tax regime for tobacco products effective February 1.

The ministry also provided an FAQ list clarifying that, under the Goods and Services Tax regime, the excise duty on cigarettes had largely been reduced to a nominal amount of a fraction of a paisa per cigarette stick, and that the GST compensation cess rate on tobacco products has remained unchanged since its implementation in July 2017.
