New Delhi, Sep 9 (NationPress) The newly introduced GST reforms by the PM Narendra Modi administration are set to significantly enhance the development of India’s burgeoning drone ecosystem, stated Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Tuesday.
Previously, the GST rate for drones with built-in cameras stood at 18 percent, while those designated for personal use faced a 28 percent rate. However, with the advent of the new reforms, a standardized GST of 5 percent has been established for all drones, irrespective of camera integration or their intended use, whether commercial or personal. This modification aligns with the government's aim to cultivate a strong, secure, and globally competitive drone ecosystem, according to the minister.
"This pivotal measure will also position India as a frontrunner in transformative technologies such as drones. The introduction of a uniform 5 percent GST on all drones provides crucial policy stability and resolves classification issues. Additionally, flight and motion simulators, essential for pilot training, will now be exempt from GST. I believe this will invigorate the training landscape in the nation, allowing airlines and training academies to cut costs on training apparatus," Naidu remarked.
Enhanced clarity for manufacturers and reduced expenses for users are expected to accelerate drone utilization, particularly in sectors including agriculture (for crop monitoring and pesticide application), petroleum and mining (for pipeline and asset inspections), infrastructure (for surveying and mapping), logistics (for last-mile deliveries), and defense (for surveillance and rapid response).
Cost-effective and easily accessible drones will further India's objectives under Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, while simultaneously improving the efficiency of various industries and public services.
The revamped GST structure is anticipated to create job prospects in drone manufacturing, assembly, software engineering, data analytics, and field operations.
With the updated rates and exemptions, the GST framework has become more conducive to growth for aviation and emerging technologies like UAVs. This groundbreaking initiative acknowledges drones as both an economic opportunity and a strategic imperative for India. The emerging drone sector is set to gain immensely from this simplified regime, the minister concluded.
