Bharuch, Nov 4 (NationPress) The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department of Bharuch has officially opened bids for the second phase of the Ankleshwar Airstrip development, with an estimated budget of Rs 76.12 crore.
This upcoming phase is expected to be completed within a span of 18 months and aims to enhance and expand the existing airstrip along with its infrastructure.
After the successful execution of Phase 1 earlier this year, which saw the construction of the primary airstrip, this new phase will concentrate on extensive earthworks, road construction, drainage systems, lighting, and safety features.
As per officials, the airstrip surface will receive multi-layered reinforcement using stone and bituminous concrete to guarantee durability and a smoother runway finish.
To prevent flooding and improve long-term stability, advanced drainage solutions like underground drains, culverts, and stormwater channels will be implemented.
Emphasizing eco-friendly engineering, biodegradable growth media and vegetation-support materials will be utilized to combat soil erosion. This phase will also incorporate perimeter fencing, concrete structures, and cutting-edge LED street and flood lights. For improved safety and visibility, reflective markings, traffic signage, and solar-powered road studs will be introduced.
The Ankleshwar airstrip, part of a greenfield airport initiative, features a runway that is 2,135 meters long and 45 meters wide, making it the fifth-longest in Gujarat. Completed this year at a cost of around Rs 105 crore, it is strategically situated near Amartpura village, adjacent to National Highway 48, benefiting from the absence of tall structures in the area, thus ensuring safe flight operations.
Initially proposed in 1993-94, this long-awaited project gained traction after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in 2022.
Gujarat is rapidly becoming a vital center for aviation infrastructure in India, leveraging strategic geographic benefits and robust government initiatives to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth.
The state is home to major international airports like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Surat International Airport, Vadodara Airport, and Rajkot Airport, while also developing greenfield projects such as Dholera International Airport to meet future demands.
Modernization efforts under the UDAN scheme have significantly improved Gujarat’s airports, featuring upgraded terminals, extended runways, advanced navigational aids, and enhanced cargo facilities to stimulate trade and tourism.
