Jamnagar, Oct 1 (NationPress) A Kisan Credit Card and National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) registration camp took place in Jodia, located in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat, led by Raghavjibhai Patel, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Rural Development, and Rural Housing, on Wednesday. During the event, the minister presented licenses to around 50 Pagadia fishermen.
Gujarat remains a frontrunner in the fisheries sector, attributed to its vast coastline. Jamnagar district itself boasts a coastline stretching 170 kilometers, with Jodia recognized as one of its six prominent fishing hubs. The local community largely relies on fishing as their primary source of income. To facilitate identification and access to benefits, fishermen are now receiving identity cards through the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has honored fishermen with the title of Sagarkhedu and initiated various welfare programs aimed at enhancing their economic status. The government is persistently working to improve infrastructure, including ports, jetties, and fishing grounds.
Under the Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFV) initiative, the central government has identified eight fishing villages in Gujarat, including Jodia and Sachana in Jamnagar. A budget of Rs 2 crore per village has been allocated for developmental activities. Proposed enhancements encompass jetty repairs in Jodia, the establishment of a high-mast tower, solar street lighting, a working shed at the port, and solar panels for charging boat batteries.
Fishermen from Jamnagar’s Bedi port, which caters to approximately 350 villages, have expressed their contentment with these initiatives. They attribute the tangible improvements in their livelihoods to the Modi government’s schemes.
The NFDP was launched as part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), a sub-scheme of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Every fisherman can register on this platform and obtain a digital certificate. Individuals registered will receive notifications regarding various government schemes and support programs.
In a conversation with IANS, Shabir Hussain, a fisherman from Jamnagar, remarked, “I am benefiting immensely from these schemes.”
Another local fisherman, Kasam, noted, “I received my NFDP card. It’s incredibly beneficial for securing loans. I’m no longer encountering any issues now. These initiatives from PM Modi are genuinely advantageous.”
