Chandigarh, Oct 1 (NationPress) In a significant move aimed at supporting farmers just before the festive season, the Modi administration has sanctioned a noteworthy increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for crops for the year 2026-27.

This groundbreaking decision, made during the Union Cabinet meeting, has been met with widespread approval from farmers nationwide, stated BJP Punjab spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal on Wednesday.

Baliawal noted that similar to the recent reduction in GST rates aimed at providing relief to the general public during the festive period, the Centre has now offered considerable support to the “annadata” by raising the MSP.

He clarified that the MSP for wheat has been boosted by a record Rs 160 per quintal, increasing from Rs 2,425 in 2025-26 to Rs 2,585, guaranteeing higher earnings for farmers and providing an extra benefit of around Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,000 per acre.

Additionally, he pointed out that the MSP for barley has been adjusted from Rs 1,980 to Rs 2,150, for gram from Rs 5,650 to Rs 5,875, for lentils from Rs 6,700 to Rs 7,000, for rapeseed and mustard from Rs 5,950 to Rs 6,200, and for safflower from Rs 5,940 to Rs 6,540.

These comprehensive adjustments, he stated, will not only bolster farming incomes but also contribute to the festive spirit of the agricultural community.

Reinforcing the broader vision of the government, Baliawal asserted that boosting farmers’ income has consistently been the Modi government’s foremost objective, and this decision once again underscores its steadfast commitment to the welfare and prosperity of the farming sector.

The Union Cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made two significant decisions on Wednesday, coinciding with the eve of Dussehra during the auspicious Navratri festival.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the Cabinet sanctioned the ‘National Pulses Mission’ while simultaneously increasing the MSP for rabi crops.

Chouhan expressed appreciation to the Prime Minister on behalf of the farmers, highlighting that these decisions will yield long-term positive effects on food and nutritional security, farmers’ welfare, and overall agricultural productivity.

He added that the government has aligned resources and schemes with farmers’ interests as its primary focus, emphasizing the Modi administration’s attentiveness towards the farming community.
