Ahmedabad, May 22 (NationPress) A significant fire erupted at a soap and powder production facility located in the Deesa GIDC industrial estate on Thursday, leaving goods and machinery in ruins.
The inferno, believed to have been ignited by an electrical short circuit, underscored a troubling deficiency in fundamental fire safety measures at the establishment.
Upon alert, emergency responders, including the Fire Department, Deputy Collector Neha Panchal, DySP, and municipal officials, quickly arrived on-site.
Firefighters employed water jets to combat the blaze and ultimately managed to bring it under control. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Deesa's Deputy Collector Neha Panchal confirmed that the incident took place at a small-scale soap manufacturing unit within GIDC. She stated, “No untoward incident occurred. The Fire Department acted quickly and contained the fire. The initial cause appears to be a short circuit,” she noted.
Factory owner Jugal Maheshwari also indicated that a short circuit was the cause and mentioned that the fire was first detected via CCTV footage. “There is no damage estimate available as of now,” he remarked.
He acknowledged the factory's lack of fire safety protocols, admitting, “It was our oversight. There were no fire safety measures in place. If they had existed, the fire could have been managed sooner.”
Gujarat has seen a worrying increase in fire-related occurrences in recent years, revealing severe shortcomings in fire safety practices across various sectors. From 2018 to 2022, the state recorded around 3,100 fire incidents, leading to 3,176 deaths.
In 2021 and 2022, 729 fire accidents resulted in 737 fatalities. Industrial zones have been hit particularly hard. Over two years, Gujarat documented 193 industrial fires and construction site incidents, resulting in the deaths of 88 workers. A tragic case is the fire at the TRP Game Zone in Rajkot on May 25, 2024, which took 27 lives, including several children.
Investigations showed that the facility lacked essential safety features such as emergency exits and had a history of past fire incidents. Urban areas like Ahmedabad are also facing fire safety issues.
The city reports an average of 38 residential fires each month, and in the 2023–24 period, there were 18 incidents in showrooms and restaurants, 33 in shops and offices, and 210 fires attributed to electrical short circuits.
