Gandhinagar, Dec 31 (NationPress) Surat is positioning itself as a leading contender to be recognized as India’s first significant slum-free city, boasting a population exceeding 70 lakh. This transformation is a testament to the ongoing impact of the ambitious urban reforms spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his time as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, as noted by spokesperson minister Jitu Vaghani on Wednesday.

In a press briefing following a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Vaghani highlighted that over the last two decades, the percentage of individuals living in slums within Surat has dramatically decreased from 38 percent in 2006 to approximately 5 percent today.

Consequently, slum areas in the city have become nearly non-existent, paving the way for Surat to be officially recognized as Gujarat’s first slum-free metropolitan city.

The minister elaborated that Prime Minister Modi initiated a forward-thinking program aimed at making cities and metropolitan areas free from slums, thereby enhancing the living conditions for individuals residing in informal settlements.

Ongoing initiatives in housing, infrastructure, and rehabilitation have resulted in substantial enhancements to Surat's urban landscape.

In light of these developments, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel instructed the Chief Secretary and senior officials during the cabinet meeting to implement targeted, results-driven actions to ensure Surat becomes Gujarat’s inaugural slum-free city.

He also urged officials to begin phased efforts to replicate the successful Surat model across other cities and metropolitan regions in the state.

Vaghani emphasized that if Surat reaches this significant milestone, it will become the nation’s first large-scale slum-free city.

While Chandigarh holds the title of being India’s first slum-free city, its population is roughly 10 lakh, whereas Surat's population is estimated to be between 70 and 80 lakh, making this achievement considerably more impactful in terms of scale and complexity.

The state government is dedicated to expanding similar slum-free initiatives throughout Gujarat to promote inclusive urban development and enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize Surat's efforts in pursuing slum-free status. This initiative represents a significant step toward urban development, improving living conditions, and ensuring inclusivity. However, it is crucial to assess the sustainability of these measures and their replicability in other urban areas across the nation.
