Ahmedabad, Aug 18 (NationPress) Over the last five years, more than 2,000 individuals throughout Gujarat have received training in the crafting of leather and rexine products through a state government initiative aimed at enhancing rural self-employment, according to official data released on Monday.
The Gujarat Rural Industries Marketing Corporation Limited (GRIMCO) has facilitated 73 training sessions since 2020-21, with an investment exceeding Rs 6.55 crore. These three-month training courses are specifically tailored for individuals pursuing self-employment in rural regions, providing them with both technical skills and financial backing.
Each participant is supplied with raw materials, banners, stationery kits, and, upon achieving 90 percent attendance, receives stipends amounting to Rs 7,500, a government-recognized certificate, and a sewing machine.
To promote sustainability, trained individuals are presented with additional job opportunities as assistant instructors with earnings of Rs 45,000 for three months or as full instructors with Rs 60,000 over the same period.
So far, eight individuals have been employed as assistant instructors and three as instructors. Moreover, collaborations with organizations such as the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) in Chennai and the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in Ankleshwar offer advanced training.
Beneficiaries are provided support including monthly stipends of Rs 3,000, annual book allowances of Rs 5,000, and scholarships up to Rs 45,000 for computer-related education. Notably, three trainees have been selected for a four-year regular degree program at FDDI, receiving full financial backing.
GRIMCO further enhances these initiatives with toolkits, bicycles under educational schemes, and government office renovation projects, ensuring that rural artisans have access to both livelihood opportunities and resources close to their residences.
In recent years, Gujarat has significantly broadened youth skill development beyond conventional trades through investments in diverse training sectors. Through the Mukhyamantri Skill Development Initiative (MSDI) and over 550 Industrial Training Institutes, more than 6.5 lakh youth have received training in vocational skills, while Kaushalya – Skill University now offers advanced courses in robotics, IoT, data analytics, and drone technology.
The state has also established modern ITI campuses, initiated drone training centers, and partnered with industry bodies to develop globally relevant programs in logistics and supply chain.
In addition to technical skills, the Finishing School Project has trained over 81,000 students in soft skills and employability, while i-Hub in Ahmedabad supports over 800 student startups under SSIP 2.0 with funding and incubation.
