New Delhi, Jan 19 (NationPress) Actor Gul Panag and Arjuna awardee boxer Saweety Boora participated in the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ initiative on Sunday, emphasizing that it is the only means to foster a sporting and fitness culture in the nation.
The duo led over 500 cyclists at the Leisure Valley Park in Gurugram, focusing on the Road Safety theme for this week’s nationwide cycling event, which was inaugurated by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya last month.
“I have been a part of the Fit India movement since its inception years ago. It is a remarkable initiative by the Sports Authority of India,” stated Gul Panag.
She elaborated that the Fit India movement is essential for cultivating a sporting and fitness culture, which will position India to secure more medals in competitive sports.
“However, we must commence with a fitness culture. That’s where Fit India contributes significantly, and ‘Sundays on Cycle’ is an excellent initiative. Even if we can’t ride on other days, we can spare some time on Sundays for a leisurely ride,” Gul Panag remarked.
“Ensuring road safety, especially for cyclists, is crucial. Cyclists should wear helmets and protective gear such as knee and elbow guards. Please prioritize safety while riding,” she advised.
Saweety Boora, the world champion in the light-heavyweight category, commented, “Cycling is advantageous for overall fitness and health, whether you are young or old.”
At the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) in Patiala, over 80 riders braved cold temperatures and dense fog to complete an 11 km cycling event. The participants included administrative staff, sports scientists, support personnel, coaches, diploma trainees, and National Centres of Excellence (NCOE) athletes.
At the Regional Centre Gandhinagar, 50 riders from India Post participated in the cycle rally, while another 50 riders from the 15th Battalion of Bihar Regiment cycled in RC Kolkata.
NCOE Sonepat organized activities under the theme of Women Warriors at 10 locations, including Khelo India Centres (KICs) and Khelo India Accredited Academies (KIAAs). Young hockey talents, along with sub junior world championship players Tamanna and Ravina, took part in the event.
