Srinagar, March 9 (NationPress) A fashion show held in J&K's ski resort of Gulmarg, during the sacred month of Ramzan, has sparked intense criticism from various quarters on Sunday. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has instructed authorities to provide a comprehensive report within 24 hours.
The outrage and discontent are completely justified. The visuals I have encountered exhibit a blatant disregard for local sentiments, especially during this holy month. My office has been in communication with local authorities, and I have requested a report to be submitted in the next 24 hours. Subsequent actions, as deemed necessary, will follow based on this report,” Omar Abdullah stated on the official X handle of the J&K Chief Minister.
The fashion event, which reportedly showcased models parading in semi-nude attire against the snowy backdrop of Gulmarg, received strong condemnation from senior separatist leader and the valley's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
“This is outrageous! An obscene fashion show has been organized in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramzan, with pictures and videos going viral, igniting shock and fury among the populace. How can this be tolerated in a valley celebrated for its sufi and spiritual culture, as well as the profound religious values of its inhabitants? Those responsible must be held accountable immediately,” Mirwaiz declared on X.
“Such indecency disguised as tourism promotion will not be accepted in Kashmir!” he added.
Prominent social activist and environmental observer, Raja Muzaffar Bhat, also voiced his disapproval of the event.
“Who permitted this nude fashion show at Gulmarg during the Holy Ramzan? Semi-nude individuals strutting on snow. Will the Tourism Department and CEO GDA clarify? Why are you intent on undermining our moral, ethical, cultural, and religious values?” he questioned on X.
The ski resort of Gulmarg is currently in the spotlight as it hosted the inaugural event of the ‘Khelo India Winter Games 2025’, featuring four main disciplines: Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, and Snowboarding.
During the first segment of the KIWG-2025 competitions, Ladakh emerged as the overall leader, claiming seven medals, including four golds. Tamil Nadu followed with five medals, three of which were gold, while Maharashtra secured a total of ten medals, but only two golds, finishing in third place.
