Key Takeaways
Gulmarg (J&K), Feb 23 (NationPress) - The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, emphasized the immediate necessity for artificial snow production in Gulmarg to protect winter sports and enhance tourism during the inauguration of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026. He pointed out that climate change presents significant challenges to traditional winter athletics in the region, advocating for artificial snow to elevate Gulmarg as a premier global ski destination.
While welcoming participants, Abdullah underscored the need to adapt to fluctuating weather conditions, as recent snowfall trends have become increasingly erratic. This unpredictability has compelled authorities to reconsider their long-term strategies for winter sports infrastructure.
The government is dedicated to transforming Gulmarg into a world-class skiing hub, ensuring that sporting events can continue despite climatic hurdles, he stated.
Abdullah also stressed that depending solely on natural snowfall is no longer viable, advocating for the establishment of artificial snow generation systems to protect the future of winter sports.
While acknowledging potential concerns regarding artificial snow initiatives, he affirmed that such strategies are crucial to preventing the loss of tourism revenue and safeguarding livelihoods tied to winter tourism. "Thousands of local stakeholders, such as hoteliers, guides, transport operators, and small businesses, rely on the winter season," he noted.
He assured that the administration would provide comprehensive support to athletes and sports infrastructure to cultivate more international-level competitors from Jammu and Kashmir.
Congratulating skier Arif Khan for his achievements, he expressed optimism that more athletes would emerge from these games. He reiterated that participation in sports is as vital as winning medals, emphasizing that sustained investment in winter sports and tourism would position Gulmarg among the top global skiing venues while ensuring economic stability for local communities.
Approximately 400 athletes from 30 states and Union Territories are taking part in the Khelo India Winter Games, with key events including ski mountaineering, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, and snowboarding.
