Srinagar, December 13 (NationPress) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Saturday that Jammu and Kashmir is poised to attract an investment of Rs 5.5 billion in the tourism sector through an externally funded initiative.

He expressed optimism that this investment, coupled with collaborative efforts, would allow J&K to reclaim its status as India's premier adventure tourism destination.

Earlier in the day, Abdullah inaugurated Asia's longest ski drag lift at Kongdori, Gulmarg, a significant enhancement to the skiing infrastructure that will bolster Gulmarg's reputation on the global winter sports stage.

The Chief Minister also opened the rotating conference hall at Affarwat, Gulmarg.

He was joined by Advisor Nasir Sogandi, MLA Gulmarg Farooq Shah, and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq.

Later, while addressing a gathering of adventure tour operators present for the 17th annual convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) scheduled from December 17 to December 20, the Chief Minister remarked that Jammu and Kashmir boasts vast natural potential. He emphasized that with the right blend of professional expertise and coordinated efforts, the region could easily regain its former glory in adventure tourism.

Omar reiterated that the success of tourism should not be merely measured by the number of tourists who visit Kashmir once; instead, true success will be realized when visitors are inspired to return year after year.

He emphasized the importance of a long-term relationship with tourists, stating, “Our goal should be to have visitors declare that they will choose Kashmir for their vacations year after year.” He believes this objective can only be achieved if all stakeholders collaborate effectively.

The Chief Minister urged the tourism department and related agencies to work in sync to enhance the sector and elevate the overall tourist experience.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir, noting that setbacks and concerning incidents have emerged frequently. He mentioned that it sometimes felt as though the region was continually facing adversity.

Omar also pointed out that the anticipated relief during winter did not fully materialize, as the season remained largely dry, adversely affecting tourism and the livelihoods dependent on it.

He requested the community to pray for snowfall, albeit in moderation, to avoid overwhelming conditions.
