Har Ghar Tiranga campaign unites India, 8 crore selfies uploaded: PM Modi
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 30 August lauded the patriotic fervour generated by the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, saying such initiatives bind society together and strengthen citizens' bond with the nation. He made the remarks during the 137th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat.
What Modi Said
Speaking on the programme, Modi reflected on August as a month rich in patriotic milestones. “In the month of August, we get to see many different colours of patriotism all around us. Occasions from ‘National Handloom Day’ and the anniversary of the ‘Quit India Movement’ to ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ make it special. ‘Independence Day’ and ‘National Space Day’ fill every countryman with pride,” he said.
He added that the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign “further strengthens this sentiment,” and noted that the 2026 edition carried additional significance as it coincided with the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, India’s national song. “This time, over 8 crore Tiranga selfies were uploaded,” he said.
The Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign
Launched as a nationwide initiative, Har Ghar Tiranga encourages citizens to bring the national flag home and hoist it to mark Independence Day. The 2026 campaign was formally dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, adding a cultural and historical dimension to the patriotic exercise.
This year, Indian missions abroad also participated actively, extending the campaign’s reach well beyond India’s borders.
Suryapath Tiranga: A Global Journey of the Tricolour
Modi highlighted a new dimension to the campaign — the Suryapath Tiranga initiative, under which the Indian Tricolour was hoisted progressively across the world as the sun moved from east to west. “The Tricolour was hoisted in Suva, Fiji, at the first light of dawn,” he noted.
The flag was subsequently hoisted at Indian Missions and Posts across Asia, Africa, Europe, and finally at San Francisco in the United States. “You can imagine how magnificent those scenes must have been; as the sun traversed across the world, the Indian Tricolour was hoisted in its wake,” Modi said.
Significance and Broader Impact
The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has grown into one of India’s largest civic participation drives since its launch. The 8 crore selfies figure from the 2026 edition underscores the scale of public engagement. Notably, the global rollout via the Suryapath Tiranga initiative marks a first in the campaign’s history, taking the Tricolour on a continuous, sunrise-to-sunrise journey across continents.
Modi extended congratulations to all those involved, saying, “Such efforts bind society together and deepen our connection with the nation.” As the campaign continues to evolve, the inclusion of Indian diaspora and overseas missions signals a broadening of its scope in the years ahead.
