Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 9 August called on citizens across India to join the Centre's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign as the country counts down to its 80th Independence Day, describing the national flag as a 'pride' and 'constant source of inspiration.' This year's edition of the annual campaign runs under the theme 'Vande Mataram', coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the iconic national song.

Modi's Appeal and the 'Vande Mataram' Theme

Taking to social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi reposted a Ministry of Culture update, writing: 'Our Tricolour is our pride and a constant source of inspiration to always give our best for the nation.' He urged citizens to 'participate enthusiastically in the Har Ghar Tiranga movement and renew our collective resolve to contribute towards building a Viksit Bharat.'

Modi specifically noted his appreciation for the campaign's thematic focus, stating: 'Glad that this year's efforts are dedicated to Vande Mataram and that too at a time when we are marking its 150th anniversary.' The choice of theme links India's pre-Independence spirit of resistance to the contemporary nation-building narrative.

Ministry of Culture: Events and 'Suryapath Tiranga'

The Ministry of Culture, in its own post on X, said that for 150 years, the call of Vande Mataram 'has stirred the soul of a nation.' It announced a range of on-ground activities — Tiranga Yatras, Tiranga Rallies, Tiranga Concerts, and mass singing of Vande Mataram — to mark Independence Day across the country.

Notably, the ministry unveiled a first-of-its-kind initiative called 'Suryapath Tiranga', described as a global celebration that 'unites Indians across the globe' in honouring the Tricolour. Citizens have been asked to hoist the national flag at their homes and upload selfies on the campaign's official website.

BJP's Tiranga Yatra Across States

Separately, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched 'Tiranga Yatras' across multiple states on the same day, framing the rallies as a tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters. In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav participated in a Tiranga Yatra in Bhopal, telling reporters: 'With the call of Quit India, the world witnessed the longing for freedom within India... It is the duty of every patriotic citizen to remember the sacrifices made by all our revolutionaries, martyrs and freedom fighters, who made sacrifices.'

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also joined the rally, emphasising the role of youth: 'Our youth are a symbol of energy. Our youth have the strength to face every challenge for the country... With this vision, the Tiranga Yatra is being launched across the country by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the world's largest political organisation.'

What the Campaign Asks of Citizens

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, now in its fourth consecutive year around Independence Day, asks households to display the national flag during the 13–15 August window. Participants are encouraged to register their flag-hoisting moment on the official campaign portal. The 'Vande Mataram' theme adds a cultural and historical layer this year, connecting the 1875-composed song — which became a rallying cry during the independence movement — to present-day patriotic expression.

With the 80th Independence Day approaching, the campaign's scale — spanning state governments, the Union Cabinet, and civil society — signals the Centre's intent to sustain the mass-participation model established in previous editions.
