The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttarakhand has recommended the immediate dismissal of former Haridwar Municipal Commissioner Varun Chaudhary and imposed a major punishment on former District Magistrate Karmendra Singh in connection with the Haridwar land purchase scam, officials confirmed on 19 June. Singh was found guilty of serious negligence in the discharge of his official duties following a detailed investigation.

According to official sources, recommendations for action against both officers are being sent to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in accordance with service rules. Additionally, directions have been issued to record an adverse entry in the service record of Ajayveer Singh, who was serving as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) at the relevant time, and to withhold three of his annual increments.

The punitive measures follow a special investigation and audit commissioned after preliminary inquiries flagged irregularities in the land deal. Both Karmendra Singh and Varun Chaudhary had been suspended earlier as the probe gathered pace.
