Chandigarh, Oct 11 (NationPress) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated on Saturday that instead of protecting their “blue-eyed” officers, the Haryana government must ensure justice for the family of late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar by taking action against the key officials mentioned in his suicide note.

During his interaction with the media following a visit to Puran Kumar's family, the Chief Minister urged both the government of India and the Haryana government to support the grieving family during this challenging time.

He emphasized that the Haryana government should prioritize justice for the affected family over the interests of their “blue-eyed officers”.

Mann mentioned that he has brought this issue to the attention of the Governor of Punjab, who also serves as the Chief Administrator of Chandigarh, insisting that immediate action be taken against the officers named by Puran Kumar.

The Chief Minister expressed concern for the entire family, who are currently experiencing trauma following the death of the senior IPS officer, who came from a modest background. He noted that the deceased officer's wife is a senior official in the Haryana government and that it is regrettable that such instances of targeting marginalized groups are increasing in the country.

Mann remarked that this situation appears to be a conspiracy aimed at undermining senior officers and the general populace from weaker and underprivileged backgrounds who occupy high positions.

He also referenced the Chief Justice of India, stating that a troll army is consistently creating memes targeting him as part of their malicious agenda.

“It is regrettable that discriminatory policies are being enforced against these sons of the soil. Even traditional policies are coming under fire because he comes from a common, non-political family,” the Chief Minister added.

In the meantime, the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has taken suo motu notice of the suicide incident and has requested a report from the Director General of Police in Chandigarh.

Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi has directed the Chandigarh DGP to provide a report regarding this situation and the actions taken thus far in response to the suicide note and the complaint submitted by his wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior bureaucrat from Haryana, through an ADGP-level officer to the commission on October 13.

Meanwhile, Jai Narayan, a spokesperson for the 31-member committee advocating for justice for Puran Kumar, informed the media that they established this committee on Friday to promote the movement throughout Haryana, consisting of key members from diverse regions.

“The government has not conducted any substantial investigation, and we demand that at the very least, those accountable be terminated; only then will the post-mortem be conducted,” he stated.

Inspector General of Police Puran Kumar, who reportedly shot himself at his Chandigarh residence on October 7 with his service revolver, left behind a “final note”.

The victim's wife, Amneet P. Kumar, in a letter to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, has requested justice for her husband. The letter, labeled urgent and confidential, expressed profound distress over what she termed a “grave injustice” and “complete administrative inaction” even after more than 48 hours following her husband's passing.

In a nine-page “suicide note”, Puran Kumar allegedly accused nine current IPS officers from the Haryana Police, one retired IPS officer, and three retired IAS officers of “caste-based discrimination”.

The serving officers mentioned included DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya.

In the meantime, the government has relieved Bijarniya from his position, appointing Surinder Singh Bhoria as the new Superintendent of Police for Rohtak, while Bijarniya has not been assigned a new role yet.

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi wrote to the wife of the late Haryana IPS officer, stating that the incident “reveals that even the highest-level officers can be denied social justice on account of discriminatory attitude”.

“The demise of Mr. Y. Puran Kumar illustrates that even the highest-level officers can be deprived of social justice due to the biased attitudes and preconceived notions of those in power. Millions of Indians stand with you in your quest for justice,” she wrote.
