Chennai, Aug 19 (NationPress) HDFC Bank stated on Tuesday that a comprehensive evaluation of its ATM located in Tamil Nadu's Kancheepuram showed no signs of electrical malfunctions after a report surfaced about a man experiencing an electric shock while trying to withdraw cash.
In a message from Shripad Sukenkar of the bank’s Corporate Communications team, it was noted: "No electrical faults or irregularities were found. We maintain the utmost safety standards, ensuring the ATM is secure for our clients."
This statement from the bank followed an incident on Sunday when a 35-year-old local resident, Venkatesan, reported receiving shocks from the ATM keypad.
As per reports, he had visited the ATM near the Head Post Office with his eight-year-old son after a trip to the vegetable market. While entering his PIN, he felt a sudden shock that worsened when he attempted again. His right hand suffered significant discomfort, prompting him to seek medical attention at the Kancheepuram Government Hospital.
Law enforcement from Vishnu Kanchi station swiftly responded to the scene after the incident gained attention. Using a tester, officers verified that the keypad area was experiencing low-voltage electrical leakage. Although the police confirmed that the leakage was not life-threatening, it was strong enough to cause painful shocks. Local residents noted that others had also experienced minor shocks at the same ATM recently, although no severe injuries were reported.
Concerned about further occurrences, many individuals chose to steer clear of the machine, with some opting to use pens or other objects to interact with the keypad.
In light of the incident, police directed HDFC Bank to promptly repair the ATM and address any potential hazards. Local residents also called for regular safety inspections of ATM facilities to ensure customer protection.
