Chennai, Oct 5 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a weather alert predicting heavy rainfall across 12 districts in Tamil Nadu today.
The districts likely to experience significant downpours include Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, and Sivaganga, with potential thunderstorms in certain areas.
The latest bulletin indicates that widespread rainfall occurred across many regions of the state on Saturday, with Hosur in Krishnagiri district recording the highest at 12 cm, followed closely by Dindigul with 11 cm. Villupuram district’s Avalurpet and Semmedu each saw 10 cm of rain.
Meteorologists link these showers to a low-pressure system over the southern peninsular region and neighboring areas of Tamil Nadu.
This system is pulling moisture from the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, enhancing local convection and increasing the chance of thunderstorms.
In addition to heavy rainfall, light to moderate rain is anticipated across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Monday until October 10.
While many areas are expected to experience only sporadic showers, the RMC has warned residents in at-risk districts about the possibility of intense, brief rainfall that might lead to localized flooding in low-lying regions.
The weather bureau has also released a temperature advisory, suggesting fluctuating conditions in the next 48 hours. Daytime maximum temperatures may decrease by 2–3 degrees Celsius in some districts due to ongoing cloud cover and rain, while certain interior areas may see a slight rise of 2–3 degrees Celsius as drier conditions emerge.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and steer clear of waterlogged areas, while farmers are encouraged to adjust their fieldwork and harvesting plans accordingly.
Disaster management teams are on standby in rain-prone districts to address any emergencies. The RMC will keep a close watch on the changing weather patterns and provide timely updates. Residents are advised to follow official guidance and track alerts through government channels and weather applications to stay safe.
