Chennai, Dec 16 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued a forecast on Tuesday, indicating that heavy rainfall is expected in the mountainous areas of Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, with possible rain at a few spots in Tenkasi district. Additionally, light to moderate showers, along with thunderstorms, are anticipated in various regions of the state, including Puducherry and Karaikal.
The Meteorological Department noted that alterations in the speed and direction of easterly winds are likely to stimulate rainfall across multiple areas.
This could lead to isolated incidents of light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning, throughout the day in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
A specific alert has been issued for potential heavy rainfall at isolated locations in the ghat regions of Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts, with forecasts suggesting similar weather patterns may persist in the following days.
On Wednesday, Thursday, and December 22, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in parts of southern and northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
However, from December 19 to 21, the weather is predicted to remain predominantly dry across these areas.
In terms of temperature, the department reported no significant changes in minimum temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Tuesday and Wednesday. From December 18 to 20, minimum temperatures in certain regions may fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius below normal, leading to cooler nighttime conditions.
In Chennai and its suburbs, the forecast indicates a partly cloudy sky, with moderate rain and thunder expected at several locations in the city. The maximum temperature is projected to be around 28 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to range between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre has issued a stern warning for coastal areas. Squally winds with speeds between 35 and 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are expected over the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and adjacent areas of the Kumari Sea. Due to these rough sea conditions, fishermen are advised against venturing into these waters until Friday.
Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly in hilly and coastal regions, are urged to exercise caution and heed official advisories closely.
