Kolkata, Aug 4 (NationPress) The districts in northern West Bengal are currently grappling with relentless downpours and landslides affecting the hilly areas. Weather officials have indicated that these regions will experience significant rainfall over the coming days.
The Met Office has forecasted that the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain until Saturday. An orange alert has been issued for these five districts.
A representative from the Met department stated that heavy rainfall is also likely in other north Bengal areas, including North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda until Wednesday. "Heavy rains will persist in these five districts from Tuesday through Saturday, leading to the overflowing of several rivers and a heightened risk of further landslides in the north Bengal hills," he explained.
Continuous rainfall over the last few days has triggered landslides in multiple locations in the hilly regions since Sunday morning, with the most significant impact on the West Bengal-Sikkim lifeline, National Highway-10.
Landslides occurred at various spots, including Mamkhola, Rishikhola, and Tarkhola. Following these landslides, a large crack emerged on the road in Rishikhola, damaging several other roads and temporarily halting vehicular movement between West Bengal and Sikkim.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in Kolkata over the next few days, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Similar forecasts have been issued for other districts in south Bengal, including Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura.
Additionally, a warning for rain with thunderstorms has been issued for various south Bengal districts, such as North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia on both Monday and Tuesday.
The minimum temperature recorded in Kolkata on Monday morning was 26.1 degrees Celsius, which is 0.4 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature in the city on Sunday reached 31.6 degrees Celsius, 0.9 degrees below the average.
