Shimla, May 27 (NationPress) With approximately 70 percent of the residents of this hill state situated in earthquake-prone zones four and five, as well as being vulnerable to various other natural calamities, the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) is set to conduct its ninth state-wide earthquake simulation on June 6. This initiative is in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority and will encompass all 12 districts, officials announced on Tuesday.
A workshop for orientation and coordination was held for all stakeholders related to this exercise, where Major General (retd) Sudhir Bahl, Principal Advisor of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), provided extensive insights into the framework and action plan for the large-scale mock exercise.
Deputy Commissioners, members of the District Disaster Management Team, and sub-divisional officers took part in the workshop via virtual means.
Bahl emphasized that the goal of this extensive mock exercise is to assess and enhance the coordination and preparedness among different departments, agencies, and the citizenry to effectively tackle natural disasters such as earthquakes.
Throughout the simulation, the performance of emergency services, rescue operations, and resource availability will undergo practical evaluation.
He mentioned that a tabletop exercise would be conducted in preparation for the mock drill, urging heads and nodal officers of all relevant departments to ensure their attendance.
Furthermore, district and sub-division level officers are expected to engage in the exercise through virtual platforms.
Bahl indicated that if the state readies itself for earthquakes through this grand mock exercise, it will naturally enhance its preparedness for other disasters as well.
D.C. Rana, Director and Special Secretary (Revenue and Disaster), provided thorough details regarding the arrangements being made by HPSDMA for this state-wide simulation.
He stated that the collaborative efforts of the SMDAMA and NDMA will mark a significant advancement in disaster management within the state, allowing for a thorough evaluation of readiness and the capability to address other disasters.
