New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) The President of Delhi BJP, Virendra Sachdeva, proclaimed the commencement of the Assembly session under a new BJP administration as a significant event, representing the restoration of genuine democratic principles in the region.
Sachdeva, who has led the Delhi BJP to reclaim power after 27 years, asserted that the previous decade witnessed Assembly sessions that merely served to foster chaos.
His statements came alongside a demonstration by AAP legislators, spearheaded by former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, outside Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s office in the Assembly, demanding the swift implementation of the promised Rs 2,500 monthly financial aid for women, as outlined in the BJP manifesto.
“A healthy debate is the backbone of democracy. I anticipate that under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Assembly will focus on crucial developmental issues concerning Delhi,” he remarked.
“The initial step in democracy is to accord the Opposition its rightful place in the Assembly, and it is unfortunate that for a decade, the Opposition's voice has been muffled,” he stated.
He encouraged the Opposition AAP to abandon its disorderly approach and engage constructively with the government for fruitful discussions.
He emphasized that the Delhi Assembly has a reputation for extensive sessions and discussions, with equitable opportunities for all members to engage in debate, and expressed hope that this practice would be reinstated.
“I firmly believe Chief Minister Gupta will remain steadfast in maintaining the Assembly's dignity and honoring democratic protocols,” he added.
Sachdeva mentioned that the tabling of the CAG report will be part of the Assembly agenda, and it will be addressed promptly.
Earlier, Delhi CM Gupta, along with her Council of Ministers, took the oath as members of the Legislative Assembly as the first session of the House commenced under the oversight of pro-tem Speaker Arvinder Singh Lovely.
The oath-taking began with CM Rekha Gupta, followed by BJP ministers Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Kapil Mishra, Ravinder Singh Indraj, Pankaj Kumar Singh, and Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Notably, Sirsa took his oath in Punjabi, while Kapil Mishra opted for Sanskrit.
The AAP's 22 MLAs, including the Leader of Opposition Atishi, also took their oaths during the inaugural session.
With her new role, Rekha Gupta becomes the fourth woman to serve as Chief Minister of Delhi, following in the footsteps of Sheila Dikshit, Sushma Swaraj, and Atishi.
She is also the fourth BJP leader to occupy the top position in the nation's capital, succeeding Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj.
The inaugural session of the new 70-member Delhi Assembly is scheduled to continue for two additional days – February 25 and 27.
