Hyderabad's iconic Bonalu festival will be celebrated from 16 July to 13 August 2025, with the opening ceremonies set at the Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple at the historic Golconda Fort. The Telangana government has allocated ₹20 crore for this year's festivities and is making elaborate arrangements to host the celebrations across Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.

Ministerial Review and Government Preparations

Endowments Minister Konda Surekha, currently in London, chaired a Zoom meeting with officials from multiple departments to review the state of readiness. She was joined by Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Mohammed Azharuddin, along with several MLAs and senior officials.

Minister Surekha directed all departments to work in close coordination, ensuring robust facilities for devotees across the three corporations — Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri. She credited Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for sanctioning the ₹20 crore outlay, noting that state funding for Bonalu has grown considerably in recent years.

Infrastructure and Crowd Management Plans

Officials have been directed to deploy the allocated funds toward temple infrastructure upgrades, decorative lighting, floral arrangements, CCTV surveillance, drinking water facilities, sanitation management, and medical camps. Special traffic plans, additional bus services, and reinforced security at high-footfall temples are also being put in place.

The Transport Department has been specifically asked to make provisions for devotees travelling from across the state, given the scale of public participation the festival routinely draws.

Three-Phase Festival Across the Twin Cities

As is tradition, the Ashada Jatara Bonalu unfolds in three phases. The first phase begins at Golconda Fort, followed by Lashkar Bonalu at the Ujjaini Mahankali Temple in Secunderabad. The celebrations conclude at the Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple in Lal Darwaza and the Sri Akkanna Madanna Mahankali Temple in Haribowli in Hyderabad's old city.

Cultural Significance and Historical Roots

Bonalu is one of Telangana's most deeply rooted folk traditions. Devotees — predominantly women — offer food to the Goddess in elaborately decorated pots as a mark of devotion. The festival is widely believed to have originated over 150 years ago, following a devastating cholera outbreak. According to tradition, communities began offering Bonalu to appease Goddess Mahakali, whom they believed had been angered by the epidemic.

Minister Surekha described the festival as 'a grand celebration that reflects the soul of Telangana,' underscoring its role as an expression of collective faith and women's devotion. With government investment rising and multi-agency coordination in place, the 2025 edition is shaping up to be one of the most organised in recent memory.
