Hyderabad, Jan 21 (NationPress) - On Tuesday, health and law enforcement officials in Hyderabad closed a private hospital following the discovery of an alleged kidney transplantation scheme, resulting in the arrest of the managing director and several staff members.
Authorities from Rachakonda police and the Department of Medical and Health conducted an operation at Alkananda Multi-Speciality Hospital after receiving complaints that the facility was performing kidney transplants without the necessary legal approvals.
The investigation revealed that hospital personnel were reportedly enticing kidney donors from neighboring states and recruiting doctors from outside the region to carry out the procedures, profiting significantly from this illicit operation.
Upon receiving the tip-off, health department officials, in collaboration with police, executed a raid on Tuesday evening. Initial findings indicated that kidney transplants had been performed on two individuals from Tamil Nadu and two from Karnataka.
Kidneys from two women in Tamil Nadu were transplanted into patients from Karnataka. The authorities transported both the kidney donors and the recipients to the government-run Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad via ambulance.
Police stated that the hospital had only been operational for six months and had received permission to conduct minor surgical procedures by two doctors.
To prevent any health risks to the two kidney recipients, they were relocated to Gandhi Hospital.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Saroornagar) Krishnaiah and Rangareddy District Medical and Health Officer B. Venkateshwar Rao, along with other officials, led the raid.
The hospital's managing director, Sumant Chary, and other staff members were taken into custody. A formal complaint was lodged at Saroornagar Police Station by Deputy District Medical and Health Officer Geeta.
According to DM & HO Venkateshwar Rao, Alkananda is a nine-bedded establishment. Meanwhile, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Damodar Raja Narasimha, expressed his stance on the kidney racket bust, emphasizing that strict measures would be enforced against those participating in illegal activities. The minister instructed a Task Force established for hospital inspections to operate efficiently.
