Hyderabad Police Intensifies Monitoring of Chemically Ripened Mangoes
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 3 (NationPress) The Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team (H-FAST), a dedicated division of Hyderabad Police focused on combating food adulteration, is actively monitoring the distribution of chemically ripened mangoes.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar, who leads H-FAST, announced on Friday that stringent legal measures are being taken against offenders.
He urged consumers to be wary of the fruit's appearance and to confirm its authenticity prior to purchase.
Beware of mangoes exhibiting an unnatural hue, chemical-like scent, or odd flavor. If the mango skin shows unusual blemishes or if its color alters significantly when rinsed with baking soda water, understand that these could pose health risks, he cautioned.
Individuals with knowledge of adulterated mangoes are encouraged to report their findings by calling Dial 100 or contacting the H-FAST helpline at 8712661212.
“The king of fruits has returned to our tables, but consumers are advised to remain vigilant and not be misled by artificially ripened mangoes. Additionally, they should be cautious of products marketed as organic,” the Police Commissioner stated in a social media update.
He emphasized the importance of verifying the quality of the produce before making a purchase.
“As summer begins, mangoes are becoming abundant in the markets. However, citizens must not ignore the serious dangers hidden behind these appealing fruits. Greedy traders are endangering public health by opting for artificial ripening methods using Calcium Carbide and other harmful chemicals,” he remarked.
The Police Commissioner warned that purchasing fruits solely based on their shiny and golden appearance from roadside vendors can be an invitation to illness.
“Typically, a naturally ripened mango does not boast a perfectly uniform color. In contrast, chemically ripened fruits appear bright yellow on the outside but remain undercooked and toxic on the inside. Medical professionals caution that consuming such fruits can lead to immediate health issues like throat irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Over time, this may result in severe complications, including damage to the nervous system and respiratory issues,” he said.
Sajjanar affirmed that the Hyderabad Police are taking a firm stance against merchants who jeopardize public health.
Recently, the police have established a food adulteration surveillance team to enhance food safety enforcement and regulatory actions.
