Wing Commander Syal, aged 34, was originally from Patiyalkar village located near Yol in the Nagrota Bagwan tehsil of Kangra district. He had an exemplary service record and was stationed at the Hyderabad airbase.

His parents, Jagan Nath, a former serviceman who later became a principal in the Himachal Pradesh Education Department, and Bina Devi were in Hyderabad to visit him when the incident occurred on November 21. The HAL-designed Tejas Light Combat Aircraft he was piloting lost control during a low-altitude aerial display at Dubai's Al Maktoum International Airport, ultimately crashing and igniting a fire.
